... by the Sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1285)

The Sacrament of Confirmation

All baptized persons who have not been confirmed and only they are capable of being confirmed. It is required, if the person has the use of reason, that he/she be suitably instructed, properly disposed and able to renew his/her baptismal promises (canon 889).

In the Archdiocese of Toronto, the Cardinal Archbishop has recently delegated authority to pastors to confirm their parishioners due to the large size of the diocese and to enable young people to be Confirmed on or close to the Feast of Pentecost.

Sponsors for this sacrament are ideally, the same persons who served as one's baptismal sponsors. They are intended to be models of faith and so must be Confirmed themselves, be practising their faith, and be mature enough (usually sixteen years or older) to carry out the role of sponsor. A sponsor can be either male or female. Parents cannot be sponsors for their own children (canons 874 and 893).

Young people in the Archdiocese of Toronto are ordinarily Confirmed in their grade eight year. This applies as well to children of catechetical age (7 to 14 years) who were not baptized as infants but as young children.

The Sacraments of Initiation are significant milestones in the faith journeys of our young parishioners. The Archdiocese of Toronto notes that preparation for initiation is the shared responsibility of parents, the local Catholic school and or the parish community. To be eligible to receive a sacrament at Our Lady of Sorrows, participants and their families must fulfill three conditions:

  • they must be officially registered as parishioners of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish;
  • they must regularly attend Sunday Mass;
  • parents and children must participate in the relevant aspects of the program outlined below.

Please note: Registration at Our Lady of Sorrows School or past family history of sacraments received at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish do NOT constitute parish registration. If your family does not regularly attend Sunday Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows and/or is not officially registered with a parish, you are welcome to register with the parish at this time and begin attending regularly. You may register here. All other families should, at their earliest convenience, contact the parish nearest their home or the parish they regularly attend, for information on sacramental preparation.

      • Please note that these documents are different from and in addition to the registration form submitted in October, and are to be completed by the candidates and not their parents.

      • Candidates are divided alphabetically by last name in two groups (A and B). Each candidate chooses ONE date per month within the dates assigned to their group.

        We strongly recommend attending on the same day (Wednesday or Sunday) for all 3 sessions as this will ensure that the candidate is accompanied by the same catechist and will allow for more continuity and better follow-up.
